my fish have always been well looked after and suddenly my 7 year old striped dora cat fish died with no warnings but i did notice he was swollen when we took him out. Also we have just had to put another in the hospital tank and put internal bacteria medicine in as he looks ill too. I know what the problem is but i don’t know why it has happened. Could someone tell me what to do to save my other fish.

Ammonia and high nitrates are the biggest killer of fish in home fresh water aquariums. Amonia is the result of the fish urine over a long period of time. This problem can be overcome with changing about 1/3 of the water every 5 or 6 weeks. Bacteria and algae can be eliminated by installing an ultraviolet sterilizer.

If you’ve had them all for a few years, maybe they’re just getting old?

You don’t say how big the tank is, how big the catfish was or what the other (and how many) fish are in the tank.
That cat is supposed to grow to an excess of 36″ so it needed a huge tank. If it was rather small after 7 years, the tank was probably too small and it’s growth was stunted, killing it slowly. The other fish could also be suffering from stunting, but can’t really answer that not knowing the details. Fish don’t live that long, After 7 years, they could be dying from old age.
What are you treating the other fish with? if you don’t think it’s working, buy another kind, just do a partial water change and put the carbon back in the filter for awhile to help get rid of the meds youre using now.

Lets just apply a bit of common sense.
Striped Dora/Talking Catfish, (Platydoras Costatus) – 15-20cm
7 years old and there’s a bacterial infection in it’s tank – That’s like grandad catching pneumonia.
You know what the problem is, so do a 50% water change and then treat the main tank with, “internal bacteria medicine”. Prevention being better than cure and if one has it they probably all have.
