To many of us, bacteria are harmful and cause diseases. While this is true, it is also true that, not all bacteria are harmful to us. In fact there are some types of bacteria that we cannot do without. It is therefore important for us to have some knowledge on the different types of bacteria available so that we may know which ones are beneficial and which ones are not. Bacteria are microscopic, and with the naked eye, we cannot tell them apart.

They are made up of single cells and are surrounded by a tough wall, which is elastic and therefore takes different shapes and forms, depending on the environment in which the organism is in. the bacterium, just like most other cells, is able to feed on its own as food passes through the cell membrane into the inner structure of the cell. Inside the cell there are cytoplasm and enzymes that help in breaking down the food.

Now, note that bacteria can be found in water, air and the food we eat and can easily be passed from one person to another. Out of all bacteria that exist, 99% are beneficial to us. Diseases and other unfavorable conditions are caused by the other 1%. Among the helpful bacterial are those that live in the intestines of human beings. They assist a big deal in digestion and they also destroy other harmful organisms.

Bacteria that live in the digestive system play a big role in boosting the immunity system. Some of them help break down the lactose in the digestive tract, which if left unchecked, can lead to unfavorable health conditions. Some bacteria found in your children play a key role in preventing anti-biotic related diarrhea in young children.
