Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs are diseases that are transmitted through any type of sexual activities. STDs include gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV (the AIDS virus), Chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes, pubic lice, and genital warts. Many sexually transmitted diseases can be cured within a week or two of treatment and medication. If not treated, however, some of these diseases can cause infertility and even death. Spotting STD is never physical. You cannot depend on the physical appearance of a person whether he or she is infected with STD.  If you are sexually active, have multiple sex partners and does not use protection during sex, then you are at high risk of getting infected with STD. you are also advised to take an STD test.

Sexually transmitted diseases whether viral or bacterial attack the patient’s immune system. This makes a patient’s body be weakened by the disease. It also makes one more vulnerable to other illnesses and diseases.  This is why if STDs are left untreated, complications are there to follow.

STDs are transmitted through any person-to-person transfer of bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Anybody who has sex with someone who is already infected has great chance of getting the disease also. Men show more signs and symptoms than women. This makes it difficult to know if your partner is infected or not.

All sexually transmitted diseases need prompt medical treatment. If you suspect you may have a sexually transmitted disease or have any of the symptoms, one should seek help from a doctor or health professional.

Antibiotics are usually prescribed to kill the bacteria that cause the disease. This goes for bacterial STDs that are curable. Such diseases are Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Treatment may take a few weeks or even longer depending on the intensity of the disease. Bacterial STDs are transient which means they will respond to medication and can be eliminated from the patient’s system. However, if they remain untreated they can cause very serious damage like infertility, heart disease, blindness, damage to the urinary tract, arthritis, and damage to an unborn child. One may also at risk in getting cervical cancer, deafness, heart disease, genital sores and enlarged lymph nodes.

To further protect yourself from getting infected, you and your partner may take an STD test. Hospitals and different health sites today are offering accurate and reliable STD testing. This is to confirm whatever doubts you are having about your health condition. This is also to make sure that both of you are safe and does not risk the health of each other. Local STD testing may help in stopping the spread of STDs to other people. It will then manage the growth of the population of STD victims.
