First off, it can hide behind many different names. This can range from Anxiety, Stress, and Panic Attacks or Disorders. There are different specific types of disorders however.
This disorder can differ slightly from each individual. The most common theme however, is the panic attacks can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. There may not be a noticeable trigger for it either.
These attacks themselves are intense and extreme periods of fear and panic. It can last anywhere from a few minutes up to half an hour (very rarely over 30 minutes). When this happens however, it can develop particular fears about the situation or circumstance that may have been present when the panic attack disorder showed itself.
An example of the above – if an attack happened to occur while someone was riding public transportation such as a bus, this can register in our minds based on the surroundings. The amount of people, being on a bus, movement, and other factors. Whenever we may encounters a similar situation, or think about it, we remember the attack and may try to completely avoid finding ourselves in such a scenario.
Potential causes of Panic Attack Disorder can be drastic life events. A loss of a loved one or family, accidents, etc… It can also run in the family.
Can this happen even when sleeping?
It can indeed. Most attacks though tend to occur during the day – a small amount of people are affected by nocturnal attacks.
Unfortunately, Panic Attack Disorder is a large health issue that affects millions of people. It can affect a large age range, also including children.
