I’m thinking about moving to Alaska with my husband and 3 kids, but I’m kind of scared. What should I do?

I want to move there because I see a lot of opportunities for my kids and my education and life there might be easier than where we live now, so the only problem is finding a job, a home and dealing with the weather. I live on a tropical island so not used to cold weather.

They say its best to visit a place before actually moving there, and even spending time in more than one season, to see what its really like. Having said that, there are parts of Alaska that are not as cold as parts of the forty-eight states. But coming from a tropical island I would really wonder your reasons for the move. Opportunities? Education? I would need to see more specifics, like what is in Alaska that is not where you live. It could be great for kids, as far as being wholesome and the chance to explore and enjoy wildlife(animals), etc. But women often hate Alaska, so it depends on what type of person you are. Drinking tends to be a big problem at night, as there is nothing else to do, but this might not pose a problem if you or your husband are day people, etc. So try to visit first, for an extended stay if possible. Also you might try to post ads on craigslist to communicate with some locals in Alaska, and also google and read up on it online as much as you can.

I live in Alaska.
Alaska is a huge place with several very distinct weather patterns. Some places like Sitka and Juneau do not get the bitter cold seen in the north – but they do get a heck of allot of rain.
Best to come up this summer and visit the place. Look it over – then either stay or come back when you are ready.
My wife simply packed up her kid and moved to Anchorage out of the blue. When I meet her she was doing just fine!
When I retired from the military on Kodiak Island we packed everything up and moved to the interior and didn’t know a single person. By then it was us and three elementary school age kids – so – it was hectic but allot of fun none the less!
If you are gonna pack it in and head to Alaska – best to do it at end of May or early June. This is when most places are hiring and it gives you plenty of time to get settled in before winter.
Hope this helps!
