For some years I had a number of fancy gold fish in a big 4 foot tank, then a month ago they all died from a horrible disease. I cleaned and emptied the tank and have now set up up again. Waiting for the bacteria bed to develope. But can’t decided cold or tropical? suggestions needed.

Definately tropical, fresh water. They are easeir to keep than goldfish. there is an infinately greater variety and they are millions of times more intertesting. and you can plant your tank like a garden.
Don`t go for the usual plattie/guppie/barb cory mix though.
Plan you tank to resemble a particular habitat.
Eg. a sunken bit of Amazon jungle, a submeged Asian temple etc. Choose your plants, rocks fish and water to fit in with this theme.
This way you use research, design, plant and fish husbandry and you fishkeeping turns into really good hobby.
Or you can decide to keep pet fish eg Oscars, Pacus, Red tailed Catfish, Osphranemus Gouramis etc.
These become members of the family even to recognising the person who feeds them, Jumping up out of the water to take food from your hand etc.
