Acne is a skin disease caused when there is an alteration of the functioning of the skin’s sebaceous glands, resulting in the overproduction of the oily substance known as sebum. There are pores in our skin which are connected to the sebaceous glands below the surface of skin through a canal or a duct called follicle. The oil inside the follicle carries dead skin cells to the skin surface and when this follicle gets blocked, it results in the formation of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads on the skin’s surface. Sometimes, this leads to formation of the deeper skin abrasions known as cysts. Let us have a quick look on what these are:
- Pimples: These are small swellings of the skin, which may or may not contain pus.
- Whiteheads: Sometimes blockage of skin results in the formation of white or small flesh bumps, called Whiteheads.
- Blackhead: When the oil and cells get accumulated in clogged pores of skin, dark formations appear on the skin known as Blackheads.
- Cysts: The closed sacs which are underneath the skin surface or deep down the skin containing semi solid or fluid substances are called as Cysts.
The areas of the body like face, neck, chest, back, shoulders consisting of large number of sebaceous glands are more vulnerable to acne as compared to other areas of the body. There are many treatments of acne like home remedies for acne etc. Mostly teenagers are the target but there is no hard and fast rule. Adults and children are also affected though in less number than adolescents. It is not a serious threat to health yet it had become a cause of concern for every body.
