what you really need is a cpr continuous overflow, aqua lifter pump, pvc pipe and cement, ball valve ,another fishtank as the sump, filtersock, and a waterpump/powerhead to get the water back to the show tank.you want to have the water leaving the main tank filtered somehow, and a filtersock would be the best way,in my opinion, you could use another filter on the side of the sump, canister or otherwise, for additional filtration.i would not nessesarily say it would be easier than a canister filter.reefgeeks.com has everything you need, theres many sites out there, too.

no that wont work unless you magically have two pumps (not power heads) working at the same rate, if you dont the sump will overflow or go empty, you need an overflow box.

its fine, but you can use an overflow box or dyergo stand pipe instead of a power head.

remember to use a sump that is at least 1/3 the size of the main aquarium as when the power goes off remember it has to be large enough to hold the water that will back syphon.

The return pump is fine, you can also add your heater there so it doesnt have to be in the main tank.

I personally just stopped using canisters, i find them too unrealible as both my fluval 404 and 405, and ehiem pro 2 have broken within 2-4 years after purcahse and the replacement pieces are more than the either filter really.

Sumps are cheaper and you can DYI it, and for marine fish anyway, it is the best form of filtration.

Check out youtube DYI sumps for details about how to make your sump. limpitsreef has a good video.
